The Progressive Rep Scheme: How to Get Stronger In-Season Without Burning Your Athletes Out

Every off-season program I write eventually hits the same wall: the season starts, and the training calendar doesn’t get shorter—it gets harder to manage. Off-season blocks are 8-12 weeks with total control over volume, recovery, and load. In-season is 16-20+ weeks of competing demands: practice, travel, games, sleep debt, and a nervous system that’s already partially spoken for before an athlete ever touches a bar.

That makes in-season the longest uninterrupted training period an athlete will go through all year — and paradoxically, the one where we’re often most conservative with intensity. That’s backward. If it’s the longest block, it’s also the best opportunity to actually get stronger. The problem isn’t whether to load the bar heavy in-season. It’s how to do it without adding a variable that competes with everything else already taxing the athlete. That’s the problem the Progressive Rep Scheme was built to solve.

The Premise

Fix the intensity. Add one rep per week. Ride it up to a supramaximal load relative to where you started. Week 1 is submaximal, which lowers perceived anxiety around the lift. This is key. Athletes have a lot on their plate in season, and pressure in the weight room can add to their stress. Lower the perceived threat by exposing them to an intensity and volume they feel confident with.

A peaking block example:

  • Week 1: 2/87%
  • Week 2: 3/87%
  • Week 3: 4/87%
  • Week 4: 5/87%

Same bar weight every week. The only thing that changes is the rep target — and by week 4, 5 reps at a load that was a controlled double in week 1 puts the athlete into genuinely supramaximal territory relative to their original training max. You didn’t add a single pound to the bar. You changed what the bar weight means by asking for one more rep than last time.

Why the Load Doesn’t Move, and Why That’s the Point

The most important design decision in this scheme isn’t the rep progression — it’s what stays fixed. Intensity is constant. Only volume moves, and it moves in the smallest possible increment: one rep, one time a week.

Total tonnage still climbs across the block (more reps at the same weight), but it climbs through the least disruptive lever available. Compare that to a traditional wave where intensity jumps 3-5% weekly, or where both load and volume are moving at once. Every one of those variables is a new systemic stressor stacked on top of whatever the season is already asking of the athlete’s CNS and connective tissue. A one-rep bump at a fixed weight is about as close as you can get to “more work” without asking the system to also absorb “more novel stress.”

In an off-season block, that might be leaving performance on the table — you have the recovery bandwidth to push multiple variables. In-season, it’s the entire point. You’re not managing a single training block anymore; you’re managing a stress budget that also has to cover practice volume, contact, games, and travel for four to five months straight. The rep scheme’s job is to deliver a real strength stimulus while spending as little of that budget as possible.

The Psychological Trick Hiding in the Math

Here’s the part of this scheme I think matters just as much as the physiology: how it feels to the athlete standing under the bar.

Ask an athlete to hit a 1RM in-season, and you’ll get hesitation — rightly so. Supramaximal and near-maximal singles carry a psychological weight that’s disproportionate to their actual demand on a well-prepared athlete. There’s a reason max-out days produce more visible anxiety than a heavy set of 5. The number on the plates registers as a threat before the bar ever leaves the rack.

The Progressive Rep Scheme routes around that. The athlete isn’t being asked to hit a max. They’re being asked to do a rep they’ve already proven they can do, plus one. Week 1’s double becomes week 2’s triple. Nothing about that instruction sounds dangerous — it sounds incremental, because it is incremental. By the time they’re grinding out rep 5 in week 4, they’re working at a load that would have been intimidating to even attempt cold, but they arrived there one manageable step at a time, with three weeks of accumulated proof that they could handle the weight.

You get the training effect of exposure to supramaximal loading without ever asking for the max-effort mental commitment that usually comes with it. The submaximal rep count does double duty — it’s a volume variable and an anxiety-management tool.

Where This Fits in a Season

This isn’t a strategy for every week of the year. It’s a peaking tool — a way to periodically ask “how much stronger have you actually gotten” without derailing the rest of the training week or the athlete’s readiness for practice and competition. Because the stress it introduces is so contained (one lever, moving slowly, off a fixed intensity), you can drop it into an in-season calendar in a way a traditional max-effort wave usually can’t, without a deload built around it.

The bigger principle underneath it: in-season programming isn’t about finding ways to train less. It’s about finding the training methods that deliver the most adaptation per unit of systemic cost. Progressive Rep Scheme is one answer to that problem.
